To write a paper assuming we don't know much about the industry, firm, Research
To write a assuming we dont know much nigh the industry, firm, product, etc - Research Paper ExampleGenerally, economic recessions are a result of a decline in GDP growth, which is itself caused by a slowdown in manufacturing orders, falling housing prices and sales, and a drop-off in business investment. But the fundamental question is- what causes the slowdown in the firstly place? While a few(prenominal) predicted the financial catastrophe, almost everyone has an explanation as to why it happened. Although it is important to note that recessions are a result of different factors as each has its own specialized causes, all of them are usually preceded by a period of irrational exuberance. Before we look at the causes of the recent economic recession, it would be logical to first of all look at some of the reasons that led to the Great Depression, if for anything, see if some of the causes recur. Stock Market Crash In the 1920s, the thriftiness was developing at a very high rate due to the birth of many businesses and companies. As a result, there was an increased supply of money and individuals invested their surplus in the stock grocery store. On September 3, 1929 the stock market peaked, closing at a record of 381.17. Trading volume was 444,000 shares. At the end of the same month, the market closed at 343- a 10% decline. On Monday, October 29, 16.4% shares traded and the markets fell by an 11.5% margin. The markets closed at 230.17 by that time, down 40% from its all time high. Reports request that in a single day investors lost 14 billion dollars and by the end of 1929, 40 billion dollars was lost. This crash put a mete out of pressure on banks and caused a lot of money to be taken out of the economy. The stock market bubble finally burst on October 24, 1929 as investors began dumping shares en masse. On a day referred to as Black Thursday, a record 12.9 million shares were traded that day and five days later, on Black Tuesday 16 million shares wer e traded. This was after another wave of panic swept Wall Street. Millions of shares were rendered worthless, and those investors who had borrowed money to buy stocks were wiped out completely. Federal Reserves Role during the Great Depression In most cases, recession is a result of inflation but in this case it was caused by deflation. Cycles of ups and downs in the economy are normal. One of the reasons strongly touted as being the cause of the Great Depression was the increase in interest rates by the government. The rates increased, from 3.5% in 1929 to 5%. Upon increasing the rates, the government failed to act to stabilize or increase the money supply. In fact, between 1929 and 1933, the supply of money fell by 30%. This led to deflation. Bank Failures At the time there was alot of fear that banks would collapse since, there were no guarantees on cash at the bank. As to a greater extent and more people panicked, there was a massive run to the banks to pull money out and some b anks were not able to fulfill the requests for withdrawal and closed their doors. As banks collapsed, very many people lost their money. More panic followed as people lost their money and banks collapsed. This rush to withdraw money created a eye mask effect. There was no confidence in the banks and people resorted to keeping their money under their matresses. Reports indicate that during that period, over 9,000 banks failed. Insurance policies were not as advanced as to cover deposits and thus as banks failed people simply lost their savings. For the few surviving banks, unsure of the economic

Picture Bride by Yoshiko Uchida Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Picture Bride by Yoshiko Uchida - Essay ExampleGovernment, fueled by the fears of terrorism, violate immigrant rights and even trampled on citizenship rights of Japanese-the Statesn citizens, confirming a long history of racial bias and discriminatory policies. The very title of the novel, Picture Bride, makes reference to the existent racism due to Americas anti-miscegenation laws and the recourse of Japanese bachelors to depicting brides from their mother country. U.S anti-miscegenation laws effective since the mid-1800s barred interracial marriages of immigrants and slaves with Caucasian American women (Anti-Miscegenation Laws). As a consequence, Japanese immigrants choose to convey a wife from Japan to the U.S. Also, strong cultural traditions which obligated many Japanese to marry within their own ethnic congregation influenced marital decisions. These anti-interracial laws applied to all American minorities including Blacks, Indians, and Asians (Asian Americans and Anti-Mis cegenation Statutes). Tacit segregation of Japanese and white Americans is a sign of underlying discrimination in American society. In the novel, Kiku notes that the fine white American ladies and gentlemen have their own stores (Uchida 25). ... From early in the book, in 1917, racism already begins to rear its ugly head. Taro, a Japanese immigrant in America laments to his wife, Hana that when the white men felt that we Asians were threatening their jobs, then words like yellow peril began to appear in the newspapers and legislators began to discriminate against us (Uchida 63). tinge growing anxiety and insecurity about the American economy and stability of American jobs, Caucasian Americans complain about the influx of Japanese immigrants and the culture of picture brides. Although innocent of Japans actions during WWII, people of Japanese ancestry had to face further prejudice and violent racism because of the embattled times. Japanese in America were called the derogatory, Japs . One white American called a Japanese, Henry Toda, just before he shot him, a filthy, stinking Jap (Uchida 165). It is at this climactic sharpen that things go even more awry among the Japanese resident in America. Clearly see that a differentiation was put between the Japanese identity and the American identity, for to be Japanese meant not being American. Patriotism descends to showing prejudice toward perceived common offenders. Not too long after, Japanese ar forced to leave their homes because of suspicion of divided allegiance and anti-Americanism among them and consequently, the U.S government introduces the Presidential Executive Order 9066 in 1942 after the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941. The Presidential Executive Order 9066 (1941) reflects the anti-Japanese sentiment prevalent in the early 20th century. Even the law of the land reinforces segregation, thus legalizing discrimination and racism. The irony of the

The two former presidents of the United States of the States led the two most influential presidencies of post-war United States of America. It is, therefore, the intention of the paper to provide a detailed analysis of Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan concerning their philosophies of governance.Lyndon Johnson believed that was the responsibility of the big government to domiciliate solutions to a number of problems facing American citizens (Langston, 1992). Concerning this, Lyndon believed that the social problems the Americans faced could only get a solution from the tax and the government. Johnson valued the program of the great conjunction that aimed at giving quality life to all Americans. The program involved itself in ensuring a better education for the Americans and jobs. In addition, the program could help in f ighting poverty as well as empowering the civil societies. On the other hand, Ronald Reagan, believed that the big governments were the problem concerning valid solutions for the problems facing the Americans. In this regard, therefore, Reagan believes so much in the deputation of responsibilities. Reagan believes that delegation of duty helps better the lives of miserable Americans than it world the role of the big federal government. In addition, Reagan had the ability to communicate convincingly concerning his vision for the Americans. The eloquence compensated for inadequacy in Reagans intellectual ability. Reagans conservative nature of wanting to uphold strategies that never worked contradicts Lyndons liberal nature. Lyndon remained open to trying new strategies in delivering to the American people, as Reagan believed in the delegation of duty. The deleg ation had failed severally and yet Reagan embraced it. In

Which contexts and developments help to explain European enlargement (wk 16) and New knowledge domain conquest (wk 13) - Essay ExampleFirst of all, the course for the New World explorations and the European expansion was dented by the unhealthy interactions and relationship that existed between the autochthonous people and the explorers. It is through these interactions that pestilence and violence occurred resulting in a significant decline in the population (Greenblatt 11). The religious conflicts witnessed between the Christians and Muslims resulted in crusades that would go a long way in shaping the conquest. As early as the 11th century, the Catholic Church felt it was its duty to redeem the Spaniards and the Holy cut from people it regarded as religious infidels. It is these fervent crusades that opened the way for European inhabitants to take root in North and South America. The religious expeditions into the Middle eastward exposed the Europeans to the valuable trade goo ds which came from Asia. These goods namely silks, sugar, spices and other products that were synonymous with India and China were highly regarded in the European households. However, the transportation of such was a rather drop process that required the services of Muslim middlemen and sometimes the payments of tributes. To solve this, the Portuguese sailors had to look for an alternative route through the coastline of Africa. This way, colonization, took place and slaves were sold to Europe.Another lend factor to this conquest haze was the discovery of bills by the Spaniards. The Spaniards quickly realized that magnanimous profits would not be drawn from the silk and spices but the gold and silver in the new world. This mania about the mineral ores was generated in part by Columbus preliminary to Isabella and Ferdinand. All in all, the conquest and expansion was favored or discouraged by the respective natives (Greenblatt 12). While some were subservient, timid, kind and welcomi ng, others were the direct

Duke Ellingon - Essay ExampleDespite James compete operatic arias and Daisy favoring parlor songs, many people believe that Dukes medicamental talents, though not his primary source of ambition, were etched in his DNA, having been decided for him before he was even born. Dukes first love was baseball. While his parents encouraged his acrobatic abilities, they also stimulated his musical side, knowing that the talent was there, but just needed to be mined. At the ripe of age seven, Duke began receiving piano lessons from Marietta Clinkscales. Daisy wanted Duke to be a well-rounded young gentleman, so she also made sure that, alongside his piano lessons, he would be taught manners and elegance. As a extend of his refined behavior, grace, and the classy way that he dressed, Dukes friends gave him the affectionate nickname Duke with the belief that a young boy so noble deserved a title. Growing up, Duke dedicated a balanced amount of time to his piano lessons and to baseball. When he entered high school, Duke got his first job selling peanuts at baseball games. more or less the same time, his personal love for music began to develop into what would become one of the greatest legacies in American music history. At the age of fifteen, while running(a) another job as a soda jerk, Duke penned his first composition, Soda Fountain Rag. Duke had yet to learn to read and write music, so this composition was created but by ear. I would play the Soda Fountain Rag as a one-step, two-step, waltz, tango, and fox trot. Listeners never knew it was the same piece. I was established as having my consume repertoire (Ellington 112). Even at a young age, Duke knew how to manipulate his musical talent, a characteristic that would only become more intense as he learned to harness this talent. Surprisingly, Duke found that he enjoyed writing music more than playing the piano. He would often skip his piano lessons to sneak into a poolroom to perceive to other pianists. Body Diversity and Media - Essay ExampleBody diversity is a critical component that the society needs to address not only in America, but also across the globe. It ought to be so because some sections of the society perplex developed stereotypes about certain body formations. More often than not, such stereotypes border on unfairness, especially the ones that have discriminatory elements. For example, fatness was considered a patsy of fortune and fertility in the 20th century but currently it is a sign of poor health and selfishness. It may not necessarily be so because the degree of fatness differs across individuals and the causes atomic number 18 widespread. For instance, a person may become fat because he/she has peace of mind while some other may be so because of engaging in unhealthy lifestyles.Racism has been ailing the world, particularly the United States, for centuries now. The Wizard of Oz as a Fairy Tale Essay Example for Free
The Wizard of Oz as a Fairy Tale EssayFor hundreds of years, parents have been enthralling children with stories of magic and wishes glide path true. Fairy floors are passed from one generation to the next through oral tradition, and, in modern times, books. As various societies develop, fairy tales are changed to fit the demand and morals those societies want to impress upon their children. Thus, the style and content of a fairy tale is directly affected by the social attitudes of a particular indian lodge at a particular time. Jack Zipes adopts and assumes the magical clantale is the oral version and the fairytale the literary version of a tale when he describes the revive of the fairytale in the Western world as the mass-mediated cultural form of the folktale (Zipes 15). Fairy tales include common themes, motifs, story lines, and characters that aid in the lifters working towards a common goal. In the first chapter of his book, Swiss scholar Max Luthi identifies fourtee n characteristics that are vital to the unique classification of a fairy tales as demarcated from other forms of childrens literture. With the servicing of these distinctive structural and stylistic features, Frank L. Baums novel, The Wizard of Oz can be classified indoors the boundaries of the fairy tale. The Wizard of Oz, like so many fairy tales, naturally has cultural, social, and political undertones interwoven within the text. Virtually all of Baums characters and magical stain pertain to specific cultural or socio-political event of the time.Contemporary social issues are unconsciously rolled into the fabric of the story like the yellow brick channel and the silver slippers that both symbolize the influence of the gold and silver debate prominent in Baums time. Baum lifts phrases almost directly from Grimm. In The Wizard of Ozshe wished the girl to remain with her to do the cooking and cleaning (Baum 27) is alike(p) to the witches request if Gretel in Hansel and Gretel w hen she says, I want you to fetch some water and cook your brother something strait-laced (Grimm 53).Dorothy also states to the Scarecrow, If you come with me Ill ask Oz to do all he can for you(Baum 22). Which is reminiscent to the donkeys words in the Grimms The Bremen Town Musicians (Grimm 96)The elementary plot of this tale is similar to The Wizard of Oz in that a group of helpers accompany a hero and use their specific skills to achieve a quest. Baum does non forget to include several classic airytale motifs seven league boots are replaced with silver slippers that take the wearer any place his or her hearts desires and the classic prey used three times to summon a helper is represented by the well-to-do cap that is used to call upon the winged monkeys three times. The motifs mien in this story demonstrates how often similar motifs are re-used in an altered states across various types of literature. The witch threatens the heroes with xl bees, forty wolves and forty crow s. Though forty may non be the most common number used to highlight the unique fairy tale repetition of numbers, this number of give holds meaning. In the Bible in that location were forty days of flood, forty days of fasting and forty days of wandering. In fact the very nature of The Wizard of Ozs medium, the novel, increase the differentiation between it and fairy tales. Oz is too long a work for it to be easily recognizable as a fairy tale. some tales do not describe locations, physical features, or emotional states. Heroes are rarely afraid of foreign creatures, they just now kill them or die trying, it is merely a part of their nature as heros.Luthi (Visual Aspect non-deliniation of character p. 25) Within the first few pages Baum informs the ref of the what Dorothy is wearing, a checked gingham dress, and that she cries sorrowfully when the wizard system see her (Baum 60). The storys descriptive passages concerning the physical environment mainly relate to the colors t hat are present (what is visible), especially in the description of the lumber Psychoanalysis has classified and links fairy tales to childhood sexuality. They serve a psychological function by representing to children their subconscious sexual urges and conflicts. Bruno Bettelheim uses his The Uses of Enchantment to discuss the verbal expression of these drives in fairytales and how children use such literature to reconcile internal struggles they may be having. The Wizard of Oz provides internal resolution in preparation for something greatersex. Sex, is of course skirted around rather than confronted head on. For example in chapter eight of the novel, The deadly poppy field sleep is used as a substitute for death.Dorothy never has to run through any real death, but wakes up surrounded by dead wolves she is only mildly f objurgateened for a moment until the woodsman explains their presence euphemistically as being not dead, but shaggy. Oz approaches the deep levels of meaning discussed by Bettelheim and falls into the Freudian romance, like Cinderella who escapes her psychologically unsatisfactory step family to achieve a better life. Dorothy, though she returns to her home in Kansa, manages to move towards maturity and self-realization.As Dorothy realizes the power of the magic slippers and the other characters find what they were looking for but had all along, the reader gets the message that what we need for wholeness is within, not without. Different from the psychological approach of Bettelheim, Max Luthi worked to identify what makes a fairy tale a fairy tale. So although characters may seemingly act without logic, reason, or emotion and one incident may not connect with what occurs immediately before or after it, there is a rationale that permeates every tale. Dorothy is to some degree disconnected from reality.Aunt Em and Uncle Joe are rarely happy because reality has soured them but Dorothy who is not fully integrated with reality is able to go on a quest to discover her own happiness (Luthi Supernatural 8 p25). Dorothy, as the heroine, is in tune with the underlying fairytale theme of (Luthi p25, 34 5, 14). Dorothy seems to be unknowingly blessed. She is mistakenly revered as a sorceress The silver shoes fitted her as if they had been do for her and she accidentally kills not one, but two wicked witches. The outward sign of her charm is the mark of the good witchs kiss.In some fairytales there is a similar physical indicator, it could be freckles, red headedness, extreme ugliness or a tuft of hair. Separate but related to chance is magic. What distinguishes the fairytale from other folk literature is the prescience of magic. What is fundamental is the existence of magic and the otherworldly. Often there is a stated crossing from the mundane to a magical realm. Once in the magical realm Baum utilizes stock motifs like talking animals, witches, wizards, the Simpleton figure, caps that can summon powerful creatures three ti mes and shows that can travel infinite distances in a few strides.Help is the central motif of the folktale, it propels the narrative and defines the hero. In the folktale the hero would not achieve his objective without help, in particular the help of otherworld beings. And this support is lavished on him. Dorothy never asks for or thinks about magic gifts but when she needs them they are granted. Gifts are given to Dorothy without entreaty and do come into contact when needed but, especially in the case of the slippers, she has to work for the privilege. Dorothy shows no extraordinary strength of character yet she is given the silver shoes and fatefully obtains the golden cap.Though one would assume the nature of the heroine determines her success and reflects her good character her quest is often solely for personal gain. Dorothy and her friends want whats best for them and by next their own course they inadvertently rescue other people without intending to do so. This in turn paves the way to their ultimate goal. The happy ending, as Bettelheim reiterates, is what makes the fairy tale stand out as childrens literature. Because fairy tales provide resolution and reassurance children can easily relate and learn from the tales (Bettelheim, 10).Dorothys goal is achieved not in Oz, because Oz is not the right place for her, but instead back at home where she can apply what she has gained to get her happily ever after. The Wizard of Oz corresponds to a grand number of fairy tale characteristics, but it undoubtedly does not fit quite perfectly into the exact fairy tale mold. It doesnt fit entirely, partly because its just too big. The nature of its form, the novel, demands a greater level of descriptive information and plot explication, both which lead away from the traditional fairytales.
